Which words and cheers would best describe your class? Ask students if they think they're spunky, bright, funny, competitive, energetic, crazy, active, silly, attentive? Do they have lots of razzle dazzle? Are they loud? Helpful? Beautiful? Amazing? Get students to throw out some descriptive adjectives, write them on the board, and then vote on the ones that best describe your class. When you have some words to work with, then ask students if they have ever seen cheerleaders at a sports game. Ask them why we even have cheerleaders at games. Talk about how your own cheer can represent who you are and pull you together as a class, as well as show your class pride. Then tell students you will be using some of the words they chose to write your own class cheer, to use for the school year. Explain how chants sometimes repeat a few words for 3 or 4 lines, they have rhythm, and sometimes rhyme, and then work together to come up with your own class chant or cheer; don't forget to start your day with it each morning! A couple of examples can help illustrate what a chant is:
Our class is great!
Our class is good!
We're the best
in the neighborhood!
-or-
Who are we?
We're number one!
Who are we?
We're lots of fun!
