GUESS WHO'S COMING TO DINNER?
Start a list of people in your community whom your students admire. Select one or two candidates from that list, then work as a class to write a letter, asking that person to come to lunch and discuss his/her career with the class, current issues, how to make dreams happen, etc. (Use this first exercise to create a 2nd WakeUP! activity, where once students have received a lunch confirmation, they can write out questions for discussion.) Write the letter out on a huge piece of paper, where students can take turns to each write a part of the letter. Make sure they all sign it with colorful markers, then drop it off to that person's office or mail it in a large, decorated brown envelope. Don't make the lunch fancy; part of the experience should be the invitee experiencing the school day as your students do, including cafeteria lunches.
