DECORATE A VALENTINE & CARD EXCHANGE

Instructions:

Here's a great way to ensure that all elementary students in your classes have Valentine cards to give away to the rest of the class, and to make sure that every student receives an equal number of cards as well.

Use the large heart pattern for your students to make a Valentine "mailbox". They will each have one large heart of their own. Students will need as many of the smaller hearts with stems as there are students in your class. Cut out the large heart, and cut slits for as many students as there are.

Brainstorm as a class a collection of acceptable (cute, funny, traditional) Valentine's sayings, and write them on the board for students to select for their cards. Ask students to keep them short, as there isn't much space on the smaller (mini) cards. Students will write these sayings on their mini cards, then decorate them with markers. On the stem, they will write, "From ______" with their name. They will then fold the bottom stem of the mini card and insert it into the slots of the larger heart until it's full.

When you indicate, the students can begin their mini card exchange. Each student will visit with all the other students in the class, taking their full large heart of mini cards, and they will exchange cards, either selecting one to give to each other, or letting each other select his or her own. They will insert their new card into any empty slot. You should indicate a certain amount of time for the exchange, at the end of which time the students return to their own desks. Each student should have returned to his or her desk with a full large heart of mini Valentines again, but this time from all other students in the class. Give them five to ten minutes to read their Valentines, which they can then put in their cubbies to take home at the end of the day.
